Roll Labels: How to Pick Material, Finish and Roll Size
Roll labels look simple until a batch peels upside down or smears in the fridge.
Here is what to decide before you order, in plain terms.

Roll Labels Side by Side
The four materials most brands choose from.
| Material | Holds up to water and oil | Look | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| White paper | No | Classic, natural | Dry goods, candles, gift items |
| White BOPP | Yes | Clean, bright | Food, drinks, bath and body |
| Clear BOPP | Yes | “No label” look on glass or plastic | Bottles, jars, cosmetics |
| Textured paper | No | Premium, crafted | Wine, coffee, artisan goods |
Pick the Material: Paper or BOPP Labels
Paper labels print beautifully and cost less, but water and oil soak right through them. That makes them a good fit for dry products that stay on a shelf.
BOPP labels are a thin plastic film. They hold up to water, oil, ice buckets and the fridge, which is why most food, beverage and bath brands use them. Clear BOPP lets the bottle show through, so the design looks printed right on the glass.
Good for
- Paper for candles, coffee bags and dry goods.
- BOPP for anything that gets wet, oily or cold.
Watch out
- Paper on a cold bottle will wrinkle and peel.
- If the product lives in a fridge, go BOPP.
Pick the Finish and Shape
A laminate goes over the print to protect it from scratches and rubbing. Gloss makes colors pop. Matte feels softer and more premium. Both help the label survive shipping and handling. We take care of material and finish choices as part of our custom packaging service.
Shape matters too. Circles, ovals and rectangles are standard. A custom die-cut shape costs a little more the first time, then reorders at the normal price. Custom roll labels in your own shape are one of the easiest ways to stand out on a crowded shelf.
Good for
- Gloss for bright, colorful brands.
- Matte for wellness, wine and skincare.
Watch out
- Very small or very detailed shapes can be hard to peel by hand.
- Keep corners rounded if people will apply them by hand.
Get the Roll Specs Right
This is where most label orders go wrong, and it has nothing to do with the design.
Core size: the cardboard tube in the middle. Hand dispensers and label machines each take a set size, usually 1 inch or 3 inches. Unwind direction: which way the label comes off the roll. If your machine expects labels to come off right side first and they come off upside down, the whole run is hard to use. Labels per roll: more labels per roll means fewer roll changes, but a bigger, heavier roll.
Before you order custom product labels, check what your dispenser or applicator needs. This roll label buyer’s guide walks through the specs in more detail.
Good for
- Rolls when you apply labels by machine.
- Rolls when you label hundreds of products a week.
Watch out
- Sheets can be better for very small batches.
- Sheets also suit labels you apply by hand at a desk.
Labels for a Three-Flavor Hot Sauce Line
Say a small hot sauce brand needs labels for three flavors, 2,000 bottles each, applied with a tabletop dispenser. Here is how we would set it up.
White BOPP
So a sauce drip wipes right off.
Gloss laminate
To keep the colors bright.
Matched to the dispenser
The core size it takes, with labels coming off right side first.
Textured paper
It looks great, but sauce stains it.
The simple rule: match the material to where the product lives, then match the roll to how it gets applied.
Roll Labels FAQ
What are roll labels?
They are labels printed and cut on a continuous liner, then wound onto a core. You peel them off by hand or feed them into a dispenser or label machine.
Rolls or sheets: which should I pick?
Rolls are faster for larger runs and work with dispensers and machines. Sheets are handy for small batches you print or apply by hand at a desk.
Are BOPP labels waterproof?
They hold up very well to water, oil and cold, which is why drink and bath brands use them. Add a laminate for extra protection against rubbing.
What core size do I need?
Check your dispenser or applicator. Most take a 1 inch or 3 inch core. If you label by hand, either works.
Can I see samples before I order?
Yes. We have stock samples of label materials and finishes, and we can make custom samples so you can test them on your product.
